How to Measure for Window Blinds
Measuring your windows correctly is key to getting blinds that fit well. Follow this easy step-by-step guide to get accurate measurements for your blinds.
Tools You’ll Need:
- Measuring tape (steel tape works best)
- Pen or pencil
- Paper to write down measurements
- Step stool or ladder (if necessary)
Additional Tips:
- Use a steel measuring tape* for accuracy. Cloth tapes can stretch and lead to incorrect measurements.
- Don’t round your measurements up or down*; always use the exact numbers.
- If you have multiple windows to measure, *label each set of measurements* clearly to avoid confusion when ordering.
Step 1 : Choose Mount Type
There are two ways to install blinds:
1. Inside Mount: Blinds are fitted inside the window frame for a neat look.
2. Outside Mount: Blinds are placed on the wall above the window or on the window frame, covering the entire window.
You will need to measure differently for each type.
Step 2 : Measuring for Inside Mount Blinds
For inside mount blinds, you measure inside the window recess. Here’s how:
Measure the Width
- Measure across the inside of the window frame at three spots: the top, middle, and bottom.
- Write down the smallest width. This ensures the blinds will fit snugly, even if the window isn’t perfectly straight.
Measure the Height
- Measure from the top of the window recess to the windowsill at three spots: left, center, and right.
- Write down the largest height.
Measure the Depth
- Measure how deep your window frame is. This makes sure the blinds can be mounted properly. Most blinds need at least 90mm depth.
Step 3 : Measuring for Outside Mount Blinds
For outside mount blinds, the blinds cover the whole window and extend beyond the frame. Here’s how to measure:
Measure the Width
- Measure the width of the window frame and add 100mm to each side (left and right). This extra width helps block more light and gives better privacy.
Measure the Height
- Measure from the top of the window frame to where you want the blinds to end. Add 100mm to the top to allow space for mounting hardware and better light blocking
Step 4 : Write Down Your Measurements
Always write down width first, then height (e.g., 2000m W x 2500m H).
Double-check your measurements to make sure they are correct.
Step 5 : Choose the Side for Controls
Decide whether you want the control mechanism for the blinds on the left or right side
